Americans continue to struggle under high rents, while up to 223,0000 affordable housing units could disappear across the U.S. in the next five years alone. Units built with the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, which gave developers tax credits in exchange for keeping rents low,  typically only need to be kept affordable for a minimum of 30 years.
