DETROIT (AP) – Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick turned himself into the court over an alleged probation violation. Prosecutors say he didn't make good on $79,011 he was ordered to pay by Feb. 19. The court also demanded another $240,000 by April.
Authorities also want to know who's been paying the restitution of Kilpatrick.
In a court filing Monday, the prosecutor's office says Kilpatrick is failing to follow orders by not disclosing the source of nearly $41,000 in recent payments.
Copies of 89 money orders and bank checks were publicly filed. Some have names but it's not clear if they were the actual source of cash. Some were signed by Kilpatrick's sister, Ayanna Ferguson, and others carry the name of his grandfather, Marvel Cheeks, and other family.
It's all intended to reduce Kilpatrick's $1 million restitution to the city of Detroit. The state appeals court last week refused to strike down the special payments.
Kilpatrick was the youngest mayor in Detroit's history when elected at age 31 in 2001. His first term was fraught with allegations of impropriety and corruption. He plead guilty to reduced charges after being indicted on multiple felony counts, including obstruction of justice, assault and perjury.
