Even as technology seems to propel our society faster into the future every day, the same tools that bind us to satellites, circuit boards and handheld screens are making it easier to reach into the past.
This year, The Skanner's Black History Month Special Edition is devoted to online resources for exploring the rich histories that have too often been hidden from us. Whether your interest is local, regional or national history, it's never been easier to find photographs, genealogies, books, blurbs, videos, even interactive databases that work like games – all devoted to educating the community, and the world, about the crucial contributions made to society by our own ancestors.
We at The Skanner hope that young people in particular will spend time on some of the websites profiled in these pages, and be sure to check our website for a new Black History web page with these resources and more in the coming months.
If you do check any of the web pages we profile here, you may find yourself going back to them over and over — don't forget to share them with your family and friends.
You may also find that online history resources have the power to grab the interest of the very young people in your life, as well as those who are old enough to have experienced historic events and lived to tell about them. Be sure to talk about what you've seen and learned. Don't be too shy to gather a few friends and family around the computer and explore these resources together.
It is our goal to make Black History an institution that's celebrated by all cultures, every month of the year.
