Did you know that one in five Oregonians cannot read? Many of these individuals are high school dropouts lacking the basic reading and writing skills needed for today's jobs.
Mt. Hood Community College offers training to volunteer literacy tutors. MHCC's Adult Basic Education's Volunteer Literacy Tutor program offers free workshops that teach attendees the techniques used in tutoring an adult. Upcoming training sessions are as follows:

Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Practical lesson planning and activities for English as a Second Language and Adult Basic Skills students
This session covers each stage of the lesson planning model: warm-up, introduction, presentation, practice, evaluation and application.

Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
New Tutor Training
This course is designed to prepare new volunteers to work with adult literacy students. Upon completion of the course, tutors will be matched with individuals seeking assistance. Volunteers will tutor adults one-on-one or in a classroom setting. Tutoring sessions are usually once a week for two to three hours. Lunch will be provided.

All training sessions will be held on the Gresham Campus in the Bob Scott Room in the MHCC Library. |
The requirements to become a volunteer tutor are a high school diploma or general educational development  certificate, a willingness to help others and a commitment to the program.
Tutoring sessions are held throughout the area, including the College, local libraries, businesses, churches and community centers.
For more information about the volunteer literacy program or to register for a training session, contact MHCC's Adult Basic Skills Department at 503-491-7406 or [email protected]
