By The Skanner News | The Skanner News Published: 31 January 2022 To commemorate Black History Month 2022, the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) will present a variety of programs throughout the month of February that center Black heritage. These dynamic, educational programs are designed to creatively engage our region with Black history. All events are virtual or physically distanced to allow the public to safely participate amid the current public health environment. In-person events adhere to state mandates regarding vaccinations. NAAM’s signature Black History Month events include:
- Interactive Storytime: The ABCs of Black History (Sunday, February 13, 1p.m.) A culturally relevant children’s story read-along followed by a virtual field trip to a local Black-owned business. Interactive Storytime is powered by PNC Bank. This is virtual, free and open to the public.
- Black History Month Keynote Program: A conversation with the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Lonnie Bunch (Thursday, February 17, 5 p.m.) Bunch, who was founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, will be NAAM’s keynote speaker this Black History Month. Bunch will discuss the past, present and future of Black history. Quintard Taylor, Ph.D., retired history professor of the University of Washington and founder of the BlackPast.org, will moderate the conversation. This is virtual, free and open to the public.
- Film Screening of Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali (Wednesday, February 23, 2:30 p.m.) NAAM will participate in the screening of Blood Brothers, a Netflix film about the friendship between icons Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. The film screening will be followed by a talk back with the film’s director Marcus Clarke. This event is hosted and presented by the Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is virtual, free and open to the public.
- NAAM Night at the Seattle Sounders FC Match (Sunday, February 27, 5 p.m.) In celebration of African American athletic achievement, NAAM is thrilled to partner with RAVE Foundation and Seattle Sounders FC at their opening season home game. NAAM will feature a popup exhibition on Black history and art of the Pacific Northwest. NAAM will also distribute books and balls in partnership with the RAVE Foundation. Lastly, NAAM’s African American Cultural Ensemble will sing the Black National Anthem at the start of the match. Discounted ticket prices are available, and a portion of those ticket sales will be donated to NAAM to support NAAM’s educational programming.
