Dozens of Pets From Oklahoma Get a Second Chance at Oregon Humane Society

Dozens of pets from Oklahoma began a new chapter in their lives on Saturday afternoon thanks to the Oregon Humane Society’s Second Chance program. Volunteers and staff eagerly welcomed the 45 dogs and puppies at the airport and transported them to OHS. The animals were brought to Oregon through a partnership with Fetch Fido a Flight, an Oklahoma nonprofit started by a former Oregon resident. 

This was the first transport of pets from Oklahoma to OHS this year. Two weeks ago, OHS helped Multnomah County Animal Services by transferring in 76 pets. Year to date, OHS has received more than 1,400 animals from Oregon shelters and local pet owners.

Transferring pets from areas where the number of pets entering shelters outnumbers adopters is at the heart of OHS’s Second Chance program. Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, close to 10,000 pets have found loving homes since OHS moved to adoption-by-appointment in March 2020.

“While Oregon is always our first priority, lending a hand to other areas around the country that are not as fortunate as we are is part of our mission to create a More Humane Society,” says Mia Heaslet, OHS Second Chance Program Manager.

The dogs and puppies from Oklahoma will be available for adoption beginning next week and will be posted on the OHS website – www.oregonhumane.org/adopt.
